North West clamps down on issuing of fraudulent drivers licenses

In an effort to curb corruption involving issuing of fraudulent drivers licenses, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa has endorsed the suspension of an examiner at Delarayville Driver License Testing Centre.

The alleged examiner was served with a letter of suspension on Monday. MEC Yawa has expressed appreciation that information regarding fraudulent activities at the centre was brought to the attention of his department by whistle blowers and as a result, all 181 driving licenses which were issued by the said examiner from May are under investigation.

All driving licenses issued by the said examiners without applicants having practically undergone the road test would be either subjected to a retest or cancelled. The examiner allegedly authorised the issuing of driver licenses to people who were not taken out to the road for practical road test. He allegedly utilised registration number plates of vehicle to pass applicants, while in essence such vehicles were practically not used or hired to such purpose from the owners at all. In some instances he has allegedly been engaging two young licensed men from Rustenburg alternately, to drive on behalf of those who have applied for driving licenses

Appointments which were scheduled for testing by the said examiner at the centre have been rescheduled for November for testing to be done by an examiner to be deployed by the provincial Department of Public Safety.

Should Tswaing local municipality fail to appoint an examiner with the appropriate qualifications from the end of November, the department of Public Safety will be forced to close the station.

Three other examiners stationed at Vryburg, Mogwase and Rustenburg respectively were suspended in the past two months for allegedly issuing fraudulent driving licenses. Criminal and disciplinary cases are being pursued against the said examiners.
