The North West province health infrastructure development programme continues to gain momentum. The province just completed construction of two regional hospitals Vryburg and Moses Kotane in Rustenburg. Completion of these two health facilities make available over 320 new hospital beds in the province and 215 more beds will soon be available in Madibeng.
The Job Shimankane Tabane Hospital’s accident and emergency unit with six resuscitation beds was recently refurbished. Twelve beds for P2 patients, six beds in short stay ward, five obstetrics and gynaecology beds, five paediatrics and one isolation beds are also in place. Four treatment areas, triage area, counselling, administration and six theatres are also functional. The facility together with newly built Moses Kotane Hospital is going to be used for 2010 FIFA World Cup.
The long awaited radiation oncology unit, first in the province which was under construction since 2008 at Klerksdorp Hospital is now fully operational. The unit is expected to provide treatment to over 900 cancer patients in the province. The province was without radiation facility hence patients were travelling to Gauteng hospitals at a cost of R1.9 million over a period of five years. This resulted in some patients failing to complete treatment as they had to travel long distances.
New multi drug resistance and extreme drug resistance TB units in Tshepong Hospital, seven clinics, JB Mark community health centre, Letlhabile Community Health Centre are also complete and operational.
The department is currently constructing Bapong and Tlhabane Community Health Centres which will be completed towards the end of current financial year. Plans to build MDR phase two in Tshepong Hospital, three clinics (Bethanie, Buxton and Tweelingspan) and Lekgopung Community Health Centre are in place.
The department will soon start with the refurbishment of Bophelong Psychiatric and General de la Rey Hospitals.
We remain committed to deliver equitable health care services to the people of North West. The department will never relent until all citizens of the province get health facilities within reasonable distance.
