North West cancels 29 fraudulent learner driver licences

In a decisive action to fight corruption and fraudulent issuing of driver licences, North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa has on Wednesday confirmed the cancellation of 29 learners licences fraudulently issued at Orkney Driving Licence Testing Centre.

The cancellation was effected as from Tuesday, 20 October 2009 after the affected learner drivers failed to turn up for retesting on two occasions. The learner licences were allegedly issued to illiterate applicants who were supposed to have applied to the relevant MEC for permission to be tested orally.

The examiner suspected of fraudulently issuing the licences has since been suspended and a criminal case is under investigation by the police. The cancellation of the learner drivers licences automatically cancels whatever driver licences that the affected learner drivers might have subsequently obtained.

The North West Department of Public Safety advises people who obtained learners licences from Orkney Driving Licence Testing Centre between March 2008 to January 2009 to visit their nearest driving licence testing centres to verify as to whether their licences are not affected.

Meanwhile, the North West Department of Public Safety has suspended four other examiners stationed at Vryburg, Mogwase, Rustenburg and Delareyville on suspicion of issuing drivers licences fraudulently.
