Seven motorists were arrested during a special road traffic law enforcement operation that focused on drunken driving around the Brits and Hartbeespoort in the North West Province over the past weekend.
The arrested motorists were released on R1000 bail and their cases postponed for trial in due course when they appeared in the Brits Magistrates Court on Monday.
The special drunken driving operation dubbed “Thibela-Prevent” brings to 17 the number of motorists arrested by members of the North West Provincial Road Traffic Management Unit based in Bojanala Platinum District over the past two weeks.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono says that the Provincial Road Traffic Management authorities are increasing visibility and stepping up zero tolerance road traffic enforcement operations against lawlessness on public roads in order to reduce road accidents and fatalities ahead of the festive season.
“It would be slower or jail, sober or jail for motorists who will be travelling on our roads henceforth” warns MEC Mohono.
