North West MEC for Public Safety, Howard Yawa on Monday said that his department has embarked on a road safety awareness roadshow in preparation of the FIFA 2010 Football World Cup (FWC) matches to be hosted at Royal Bafokeng Stadium.
The objective of the three weeks face to face and school-to-school roadshow is to raise road safety awareness with a view to reduce road accidents around the Rustenburg Host City, Bojanala Platinum District and throughout the province during the FWC.
Topics covered by the provincial initiative that is into its second week include don’t drink and drive, fatigue, safety belts and stray animals, pedestrian and passenger safety.
“In addition to the 800 traffic officers that will be deployed in Rustenburg during the tournament, Responsible sharing of public roads by pedestrians and other road users will be our top priority to ensure that road accidents are minimised,” said Yawa.
Last week the campaign focused on Phokeng, Boshoek, Tlhabane, Paardekraaal, Kanana, Bapong and Serotube. Areas target for the campaign this and next week are Rustenburg, Mogwase, Moruleng, Ledig, Mabele-a- Podi, Makapanstad, Brits and Swartruggens. Road safety officers are as part of the campaign distributing brochures, reflective arm bands for pedestrians, reflective belts and ear rings for stray animals and other campaign material to communities.
Radio talk shows will also be conducted to raise the level of road safety awareness among road users in the province.
