No R5 million equipment waiting for repairs

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development acknowledges that there are challenges with regard to the payment of some suppliers who are rendering their services at Chris Hani Baragwanath hospital.

However, the allegations in the statement by Jack Bloom are misleading and unfounded. It is not true that there is medical equipment at the hospital that is awaiting repairs due to non-payments of suppliers.

The Department has prioritized the repair of all Medical Equipment. All faulty equipment from the wards is assessed by the technicians at the hospital within 24 hours.

On receipt of the recommendation(s) by the technician that the equipment should be outsourced, the relevant suppliers are immediately contacted to collect the equipments for quotations and repairs.

On receipt and approval of the quotations from the respective suppliers, an urgent manual order is then issued to the supplier to proceed with the repair.

The hospital has appointed a supplier to repair the incubators. Faulty incubators are regularly collected from the hospital for repairs.

There is currently no equipment that is lying at the hospital’s medical workshop for more than a year.

Negotiations are underway with all affected service providers to resolve this matter amicably.
