The Department of Basic Education can confirm that police in Polokwane have arrested two learners in connection with their attempt to lure an examination official to sell them the Grade 12 Mathematics and Physical Science question papers to be written later this month.
An examination official from the Capricorn district was approached by two learners with a request to buy the question papers. The official informed the police, who immediately set up a sting operation to arrest the learners while in the act. The two are currently held in police custody for attempting to pay the examination official an amount of R 2000,00 for the question papers. They will appear in court on Monday, 17 October 2011.
"We would like to warn our learners to refrain from trying to cheat by buying examination papers as they will be caught” says Minister of Basic Education Angie Motshekga.
This incident confirms the alertness of the current examination system, and the high level of integrity of examination officials inculcated over the years. The Department of Basic education is confident of its security system and control measures that will ensure that the 2011 National Senior Certificate (NSC) examination will be undertaken with absolute credibility.
The security measures in place include:
(a) Central storage of question papers prior to the examination, at venues that are under tight security control.
(b) Delivery of question papers to schools on the day of the examination.
(c) Hiring of private security companies to guard examination venues.
(d) Police escorting vehicles transporting question papers in high risk areas.
(e) All question papers sealed in tamper proof envelopes so that any tampering with question papers can be identified.
(f) Intensive monitoring of the examination and the delivery and transfer of question papers.
