About 28 public servants employed in the Human Settlements Branch of the North West Department of Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison have scored 90% pass rate in the Adult Basic Education Training (ABET) examinations.
In congratulating the officials who had passed their numeracy, communication and pre-Abet level exams for their achievement, Provincial MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono said the pass rate should serve as a motivation to those adult officials who are still reluctant to enrol for ABET classes.
“Acquiring basic literacy skills empowers employees to become even more productive and helps employees to take control of their own lives .It is no small feat for employees to have managed to balance their work, studies and family responsibilities. The remarkable results they have obtained attest to their total commitment, determination and the seriousness with which they took up the challenge,” said MEC MEC Mohono.
These officials are expected to enrol on ABET for the 2012/13 financial year to further their studies.
As part of its commitment to improve the basic skills of its employees, the department expected more adult officials to enrol for Abet during this 2012/2013 financial year.
The MEC said that her department is expecting more officials from both branches of her department to enrol for Abet.
“To those who hesitated to enrol on Abet last year they must pull up their socks and do the right thing. Education is a pathway to a better life,” Mohono emphasised.
She said through this training programme, more and more cleaners, groundsmen, messengers and other low-level employees within the department will know how to read, write and count. This will further assist in eradicating illiteracy in the country as one of the nine priorities of the National Skills Development Strategy. According to the current research conducted, there are an estimated 3.3 million illiterate adults in South Africa.
The enrolment of departmental employees on the ABET programme is consistent with the provision of the South African Constitution which affirms the rights of all citizens to basic education, including Adult Basic Education and Training.
ABET is available to all employees who want to complete their basic education or want to acquire knowledge in basic reading and writing. It further aims to provide basic learning tools, knowledge and skills.
Interested employees who are keen to enrol on ABET programme will be assessed to ensure that they are correctly placed according to their level of understanding as they will be provided with the nationally-recognised qualification at the end of the syllabus.
