Nine North West educators dead in a road crash

Nine North West educators died, and two survived with serious injuries in an accident involving and minibus and a bakkie collusion on the N4 road near Zeerust in North West. The driver of the minibus also survived with injuries.

The deceased were members of the National Professional Teachers Organisation of South Africa (NAPTOSA). They were driving from Mafikeng to attend a conference in Rustenburg.

The accident occurred after the front tyre of the bakkie burst. The driver lost control and collided with the minibus. The two vehicles burst into flames and nine educators including five occupants from the bakkie burned beyond recognition.

The three survivors were taken to Zeerust Hospital and are in a serious condition. The deceased’s names are will be withheld until the next of kin is notified.

The North West MEC for Education and Training, Raymond Elisha, said he was deeply saddened and shocked by the death of the educators, who will not be easily replaceable. He said their death has left vacuum in the department, their families and schools, especially now because the process of preparatory examinations for the grade 12 and going forward to final exams has begun. These people played a pivotal role in the transformation agenda of education system. Their voice will always reverberate in our minds and we will always treasure their efforts.

“We pray the love of God enfolds their families during these difficult times and He helps you heal the passage of time. May the love of those around you help you through the days ahead. Please accept our most heartfelt sympathies for your loss. Our thoughts are with you and your families during this difficult time,” he said.

A task team will be established to support the bereaved families and the affected schools will assist in the funeral arrangements.
