Ngobi Village to receive water after the President's intervention

President Jacob Zuma has today, 2 June 2012 reported to the community of Ngobi Village in Hammanskraal that, following a complaint about water shortage by a community member, the area's eleven boreholes had been properly serviced and now able to provide water.

In addition, another ten boreholes have been constructed in the area. The construction of 2,5MI water reservoir has already started in the area as part of the Ngobi Water Project, which also involves the electrification of boreholes and construction of pump stations.

Ms Mmatsheko Pine wrote to the President in February this year where she said: “There is the area called Ngobi near Hammanskraal, under Moretele Local Municipality, the people residing in the area are now old, aged and mostly sick. The area has been without water for the past two years. People rely on rain to harvest water. There are water pipes and machines installed but the problem is said to be pressure to pump water. Could your office kindly assist with the powers that be?”

The President today also visited the Gaseitsiwe High School to donate a Science Mobile Laboratory donated by Kusile Laboratories and Technology.

President Zuma also visited the home of Ms Pine and engaged with her father, Mr Amos Pine, on service delivery issues. Thanking Ms Pine President Zuma said: “We are happy that we have a citizen like you who took such action. We wish we could have more like you.”

Ms Pine appreciated the President's response to her letter. "I'm overwhelmed. Words can't describe. I'm so happy. My dad is so proud of me," Ms Pine said.

Later the President engaged with thousands of community members, and issues needing attention included land disputes, recreational facilities, school infrastructure, inefficiencies in municipalities, school uniforms and fencing for animals.

All other members of the community would also get an opportunity to engage the President on service delivery issues at a community meeting scheduled for later in the day as the last item of this monitoring and evaluation visit.

Earlier in the day the President opened the South African Social Security Services Agency (SASSA) Service Point which will also have a doctor on site who will do assessments thus saving money for beneficiaries who had been used to travelling long distances for assessments, as the doctor was far.

The President was accompanied by the following Ministers:

  • Performance Monitoring and Evaluation: Minister Collins Chabane
  • Economic Development: Minister Ebrahim Patel
  • Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs: Minister Richard Baloyi
  • Water and Environmental Affairs: Minister Edna Molewa
  • Energy: Minister Dipuo Peters
