A total 22 brand new sedan vehicles have been distributed to various districts in the province by the Eastern Cape department of Transport to enhance traffic law enforcement.
These vehicles were handed over to provincial traffic officers by MEC for Transport, Roads and Public Works, Thandiswa Marawu during the launch of the Easter Arrive Alive campaign at Mqhekezweni Turn Off near Mthatha on 30 March 2012.
This was in line with the Provincial Executive Council’s instruction to ensure that the department should prioritise traffic officers and emergency medical and rescue services in the initial distribution of vehicles during the initial stages of the in-sourcing of provincial government fleet management services.
“The intension is to ensure that our traffic officers are visible 24 hours a day and help us to change the perception of the public about road safety and traffic law enforcement in our Province,” she added.
She revealed also that 64 bakkies had been ordered and the first delivery of 38 had also been made. The rest was expected in April 2012. About 60 of these bakkies will be converted into Ambulances and Emergency Vehicles.
