The Minister of Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries approved the publication of the Regulations regarding the classification, packing and marking of edible ices intended for sale in the Republic of South Africa and these regulations were published on 8 February 2013.
The collective name “edible ices” is used to describe the following classes of products covered by the new regulations:

- Flavoured ice.
The classification of the first eight classes is mainly based on the minimum butter (milk) fat or vegetable fat content, or butter (milk) fat and vegetable fat content combined, while the last three classes are classified according to the actual fruit content.
Examples:
- Dairy ice-cream – Shall contain a minimum of 7% butter (milk) fat only
- Ice-cream – Shall contain a minimum of 7% vegetable fat only, or butter fat and vegetable fat combined
- Frozen fruit sorbet – Shall contain a minimum of 15% fruit

The regulations will be phased in over a period of 12 months to allow for manufacturers and packers to change the labelling and to reformulate their products where necessary.
