The newly appointed Superintendent General for Health Department, Dr Siva Pillay was introduced to the department’s senior management on 13 January 2010 at Roji Skenjana hall in Bhisho.
Pillay is no stranger to the Health Department as he had worked at Nompumelelo Hospital in Peddie and Cecilia Makiwane Hospital in Mdantsane; he also helped establish 17 clinics in the Mdantsane area.
The MEC for Health Mr Phumulo Masualle welcomed the new Superintendent General and conveyed a word of gratitude Mr Phumzile Zitumane who had to soldier on after the former superintendent general’s departure. The MEC further re-assured the managers that each and every contribution they make in the department was appreciated and urged them to support the new superintendent general as the year will be a very busy one.
Managers were also given an opportunity to raise concerns with regards to their institutions. The MEC mentioned that the superintendent general will lead the managers through their challenges and the implementation of the 10 point plan which seeks to look into issues like cleanliness of hospitals, staff attitudes, long queues, availability of drugs and many other issues.
Speaking on behalf of the managers, Deputy Director-General of clinical services Dr Nandi Diliza pledged their support to the superintendent general and pleaded with him to give the clinicians the support they needed as they are the core business of the department.
Addressing the managers for the first time the superintendent general mentioned that it must be on everyone’s mind that what ever they do affects the lives of the people and they should learn to do more with the less they have.
He also encouraged teamwork and mentioned that his doors will always be open to all the managers. He mentioned that he accepted the job with humbleness and pledged to give his best shot to all he does.
