New head of department with outstanding professional and practical credentials appointed

The Gauteng Department of Health and Social Development announced the appointment of Dr Kamy Chetty as Head of Department with effect from Monday 15 March 2010.

In her new position, she will be the accounting officer of the department and head of administration. Most recently, Dr Chetty has been the acting Director-General at the National Department of Health.

In July 2000, she joined the national Department of Health as deputy director-general of health service delivery. In this capacity she was responsible for policy formulation and development. Her core responsibilities comprised the provision and management of hospital services, health technology, radiation control and emergency medical services.

Prior to that, Dr Chetty worked as Deputy Director-General at the erstwhile Gauteng Department of Health responsible for the Health Service Delivery branch.

She obtained the degree of Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MB.ChB) from the University of Natal Medical School in 1984 and a Master of Science Degree in Urban and Regional Planning (MSc URP) from the same University in 1992. In 1993 she obtained her specialist degree in Public Health and was accorded a Fellow of the Faculty of Community Health of South Africa at the College of Medicine.

After serving her internship at King Edward hospital, Durban, in 1985/86, she remained at the hospital as a medical officer or junior registrar.
From 1987 to 1989 she was a primary healthcare coordinator and national organiser for the National Medical and Dental Association (NAMDA), and left to serve as a specialist in training in the Department of Community Health, University of Cape Town, until 1994.

She was then seconded to the ANC Health Department, head office, where she played a key role in the drafting of the ANC health plan during 1993/94.
