New Confederation Road Signs unveiled

Transport and Safety MEC Ghishma Barry unveiling the new road signs for the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup at the Roads and Transport District Offices in Cacadu District

Transport and Safety MEC Ghishma Barry unveiled the new FIFA Confederations Cup public viewing signs on Monday afternoon. With only few days to the opening match of the Confederations Cup, Barry announced that the department has been working to develop road signs directing the public to the Public Viewing areas in the province.

“We have developed a Public Viewing Mobility Plan worth R2,6 million which seeks to reduce delays through traffic management, promote alternative routes, promote use of public transport, improve safety and improve infrastructure,” said Barry.
Unveiling the signs for the first time during a media briefing, Barry added that the signs are in general conformity with the South African Road Traffic Signs Manual.

The new signs for the Confederations Cup show the 2009 FIFA Confederations Cup logo, the official FIFA fan park symbol and arrows to the direction of the venue.

The signs have a temporal road sign yellow background colour reflecting at night to ensure its visibility to the road users, the 2009 FIFA Confederations logo and the picture showing cultural events and they will be used for this cup and the 2010 FIFA World cup. These road signs will be put up in all the venues with public viewing areas of the Confederations cup in the province.

For the 2010 FIFA Soccer World Cup tournament, the department will avail various road signs that will be used in the roads around the province, routes leading to the stadium and many other facilities such as park and ride, rail station, fan parks, vehicle routes and the public viewing areas. The development of these signs saw the department engaging the former Minister of Transport, Local Organising Committee.

The department appeals to the public not to vandalise these signs as they are here to help the community. The media briefing followed Barry’s meeting with state security agencies to talk about security plans for the rugby test match between the Springboks and the British and Irish Lions at the New Nelson Mandela stadium. South African Police together with Traffic police presented their plans to MEC Barry on how they provide service to the people coming to watch the game while also watching out for criminal elements to protect the people of the province.
