New aspirant Prosecutors look forward to the journey ahead

Today the National Prosecuting Authority is very proud to welcome a new group of aspirant prosecutors into its fold, giving these fresh law graduates an opportunity to start a valuable career in prosecutions. The number for the current intake into the Aspirant Prosecutor Programme is 50, which is a significant reduction from the originally envisaged 190.

This is after the much publicised financial constraints that the NPA was faced with towards the end of the financial year 2012/13 which ended in March 2013. During that time, the NPA announced the difficult decision it had taken to put the programme on hold. This was necessary to ensure that the organisation did not end up with unauthorised over-expenditure while trying to meet its basic financial obligations such as paying compensation of employees.

Funding for the programme entailed some re-prioritisation of the allocated budget for the current financial year, in recognition of the significant contribution that this programme makes to the recruitment and skilling of new blood in the organisation, as well as building capacity for organic growth.

The 50 aspirants have been allocated in groups of five (5) each, in ten training centres in courts across the country. At the same time, the process of recruiting for next year’s intake has already started, with the advertisement published last weekend.

The closing date for the 2014 intake is 11 November, 2013.
