Nehawu Provincial Chairperson's death a great loss-North West Premier Thandi Modise

North West Premier Mme Thandi Modise says that the untimely death of Nehawu-North West Provincial Chairperson, Motsamai Gabriel Mackenzie is great loss not only to his family but to the trade union movement, the working class and the revolutionary alliance as a whole.

Premier Modise described Comrade Mackenzie as an assertive, fearless but disciplined and principled cadre who was not known for populism, reckless rhetoric and individualism but for deep analysis that could be expected from a Marxist-Leninist, collectivism and political consciousness that distinguished him from his peers.

“May his family, friends and comrades find solace in the knowledge that we share their grief. His incorruptible and indomitable spirit should serve to inspire public servants across all spheres of government to uphold his legacy. In his memory we should unite for unity in action to uproot corruption, nepotism and patronage for a public service that is committed to serve and create better communities,” said the Premier.

Modise said that Mackenzie has left an indelible mark in the sand of time for many within the trade union movement, the glorious movement of the African National Congress (ANC) and the revolutionary alliance to emulate his selfless and heroic deeds.

At the time of his death, Mackenzie who was affectionately known as Prof among comrades in the congress movement, was a Branch Chairperson of the ANC in the Francis Baard region of the Northern Cape, a National Education, Health and Allied Workers Union (NEHAWU) provincial chairperson in North West, a member of Congress of South African Trade Unions (COSATU) provincial executive committee in North West, a member of NEHAWU national executive committee and a member of NEHAWU central executive committee.

Mackenzie is to be buried on Saturday in Galeshewe Township, Kimberley. He is survived by his wife, three sisters and a brother.
