Police have arrested two drivers after they refused to comply with the rules of the road. The two drivers are known to be daughter and a father from Witbank in Mpumalanga. Traffic officers stopped the daughter while she was travelling at 113 km in a 60km zone on the R545 Kendal Road in Witbank. Her father came to intervene at the scene and was caught driving at a higher 110 km per hour in a 60 km zone.
The daughter was charged with reckless driving while her father was charged for interference with traffic officials while they were doing their work, intimidation, resistance and reckless driving. They were released on a one thousand rand bail each on the same day, Wednesday, 5 June 2013. Whey they appeared again on Thursday, 6 June 2013, their case was remanded to 27 August 2013.
Meanwhile 311 vehicles were impounded in Mpumalanga roads by Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison traffic officers between 3 and 9 June 2013 during normal day to day operations.
The vehicles include light motor vehicles, busses, mini busses, light delivery vehicles and heavy motor vehicles. MEC Vusi Shongwe says the battle against lawlessness and un-roadworthy vehicles will eventually be won.
“These vehicles which are not road worthy are contributors to road accidents and we must remove all of them from our roads,” said Shongwe. During the operations, 244 vehicles were also discontinued and 5512 fines were issued to drivers for different traffic violations.
Fifteen drivers were also arrested for drunken driving, excessive speed, overloading and false documentation. Still on road safety, the MEC has wished 27 accident victims a speedy recovery. Among the 27, Five people were seriously injured while 22 were slightly injured when a truck carrying people collided with a sedan at an intersection on the R36 Road between Sabie and Brondal yesterday, 10 June 2013.
MEC Shongwe said that it is very sad that road accidents are continuing to affect the lives of innocent people due to negligent and reckless driving. He said that such drivers must be arrested and be charged to serve as an example to other negligent drivers.
