The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) has expressed its satisfaction with the progress made by the Limpopo government on service delivery in the province, in particular in the areas identified as service delivery hotspots.
The NCOP Limpopo Whip and delegation leader, Ms Tsepane Mampuru, says the political will and commitment by both the local and the provincial government have helped improve service delivery in the province. “Although more work still needs to be done to improve the lives of the people of Limpopo, the NCOP delegation is impressed with what we have read in the progress reports and observed on the ground during our interactions with the people and during site visits to service delivery areas.”
The delegation visited several centres of service delivery, including hospitals, police stations, cooperatives, community projects and water schemes. The NCOP’s week long oversight as part of Provincial Week paid a particular attention to Vhembe and Mopani District municipalities. These visits culminated in public meetings in Relela, Greater Letaba Municipality and Chavani in the Makhado Local Municipality. Ms Tsepane Mampuru said that not all challenges could be solved overnight and, therefore, long-term solutions are needed.
The overall report with recommendations will be debated in the legislature plenary today (Friday, 12 September 2014).
Provincial Week is a key mechanism for the NCOP to achieve its mandate of representing the provinces in the national sphere of government. The theme of this week’s programme is “Together making service delivery work for our people”. In December 2011, five Limpopo provincial departments were placed under the administration of national departments through section 100 (b) of the Constitution.
