The National Council of Province KwaZulu-Natal delegation has commended the KZN government for the state of service delivery in the province. The delegation comprising of Members of Parliament and Members of the Provincial Legislature is visiting the Sisonke District Municipality as part of its provincial week programme.
After listening to presentations from the provincial leadership and different municipalities it is the view of the delegation that the province is moving in the right direction in terms of providing service delivery to the citizens.
However the delegation is concerned about the increasing number of housing backlogs especially in the Greater Kokstad Municipality. The delegation has recommended that the municipality develop a proper data system to track housing beneficiaries and to manage the allocation of houses to beneficiaries.
There has been significant progress that the District has made in terms of water and sanitation facilities as more than 50% of households have access. However, they have huge electrification challenges as most houses do not have electricity.
The delegation would however want the province’s municipalities which have shown a regression in audit outcomes by the Auditor-General to focus on predetermined objectives which caused some municipalities like Sisonke to regress. They further observed that Sisonke District was lagging behind in terms of infrastructure roll out as most roads are in bad state
Through its Parliamentary Committees the delegation will continue to play its oversight role on municipalities, especially whose Integrated Development Plans do not match their financial objectives and still have backlog on service delivery.
The delegation will tomorrow hold a media briefing on the outcomes and recommendations of the week long programme.
