Members of the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) visiting the North West province for a week long Provincial Week programme are not impressed with the slow delivery of services in the Moretele Local Municipality.
The delegation is not impressed with the lack of commitment demonstrated by the provincial government and the municipality towards delivering quality services in the area of housing, water and maintenance of roads.
On Tuesday, the delegation undertook site visits to various projects with the Moretele Local Municipality to inspect service delivery.
In Mogogelo Village, the delegation was shocked to discover that only 80 units of a 1 000 unit RDP development project were completed since 1999 while the rest were blocked due to several structural defects. The delegation was informed that the Department of Human Settlement is busy with financial audits, compilation of Geo Tech reports and beneficiary lists and the projects will be unblocked in the current financial year.
The delegation also found that there is a shortage of water supply in the municipality due to a lack of adequate supply in the Themba Water Treatment Plant. The 60 mega litres plant supplies parts of the North West province as well as the entire Tshwane municipality.
The delegation condemned the Bojanala District Municipality for initiating projects and not seeing them to completion. The NCOP also visited Serodumo sa-Rona Brick Project in Moeka Village yesterday, a project which was never completed. The delegation believes that this is a waste of public funds and vows to follow up with the District Municipality in particular the executive Mayor, Mr Louis Diremelo.
Meanwhile the delegation was happy to learn of the progress made by the province in rehabilitating the dilapidated 12 km stretch of road from Swartdam to Makapanstad. Work on this road is expected to be completed by February of 2014.
On Monday, the delegation had an opportunity to interact with the Premier of the province; Ms Thandi Modise, the MEC of Finance and acting MEC for Local Government and Traditional Affairs, Mr Paul Sebegoe, the Mayor of Moretele Local Municipality, Mr Jonas Lehari and the local municipality leadership.
Tomorrow the delegation will be interacting with municipalities that have been put under administration in the Dr Kenneth Kaunda District.
