The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) welcomes to its offices Lesley Masibi, the winner of SABC 1 reality TV Show, One Day Leader. One Day Leader premiered in February on SABC 1 with a focus on leadership, where contestants were given an opportunity to identify challenges in various communities around Gauteng with specific focus on Diepsloot.
The contestants had to come up with the best solutions that would put them at the running for the ultimate prize. The NYDA sponsored the show with both financial and content support. As part of the NYDA sponsorship prize, for the next year, Lesley will be based in the office of the NYDA Executive Chairperson Andile Lungisa where he will be involved in a number of projects including the Youth Build community project in Johannesburg where young people are building homes for destitute families.
The project is a partnership between the NYDA, Gauteng Department of Housing and Local Government, national Department of Human Settlements, Youth Build International, City of Johannesburg, Construction Education and Training Authority and the National Homebuilders Registration Council.
The Youth Build project is organised as part of the human settlements youth development programme aimed at mobilising volunteers to participate in accelerating housing delivery for approved beneficiaries. Through this project, unemployed youth gain valuable technical skills and use the acquired skills to do community service and make a difference in their communities, while opening up their chances of employment.
Lesley started at the NYDA this week. As part of his one year stay at the NYDA he will also be exposed to other NYDA business units to understand and contribute to their day-to-day operations and his One Day Leader Diepsloot project. He will also spend three days at The Presidency as well as two weeks at a South African Embassy abroad.
Lesley is a 23-year-old Bachelor of Science Degree graduate in Chemical Engineering from the University of Johannesburg. He describes himself as someone who believes in excellence and hard work. Lesley is involved in various youth programmes and says he loves helping others because his purpose is to empower and encourage young people to take responsibility for their lives.
