In marking the 20th anniversary of former President Nelson Mandela’s release from prison, the National Youth Development Agency undertakes to uphold Mandela’s legacy by working tirelessly to realise the developmental aspirations of the youth of South Africa.
Six years after his historical release, on the occasion of the 20th anniversary of 16 June 1976, former President Mandela committed his government towards championing youth development as one of its priorities, leading to the establishment of the now merged National Youth Commission in 1996 and Umsobomvu Youth Fund in 2001, operating as the NYDA.
“This was a defining moment in the youth development landscape, as such the NYDA understands the enormous task that lies ahead in addressing, through various initiatives, the challenges that continue to face young people. Mandela continues to be known globally for his love for peace, compassion, co-existence and value driven leadership,” says NYDA Chairperson Andile Lungisa.
He adds that through the National Youth Service programme the NYDA will continue to mobilise young people to take part in activities that build the nation, profile our country and instil high levels of patriotism among young people through service.
In less than four months South Africa will be hosting the world’s biggest soccer tournament, working with the Local Organising Committee (LOC) the NYDA has recruited volunteers to make the FIFA World Cup 2010 a success. The organisation will also be working with the South African Football Association (SAFA) to mobilise young people to support the world cup. Through these initiatives, young people will be exposed to the work environment where they will gain skills in various fields.
“Understanding the myriad of challenges facing young South Africans, it will not be enough for the NYDA to undertake this on going journey alone, we hence call on government at large, civil society, the private sector and young people themselves to pull together with us and realise Mandela’s dream of a prosperous country, able to take care of its children,” concludes Lungisa.
