The National Youth Development Agency (NYDA) Board chairperson to serve on Human Resource Development Council of South Africa (HRDCSA)

The National Youth Development Agency Board Deputy Executive Chairperson, Yershen Pillay, has been appointed to the Human Resource Development Council of South Africa chaired by Deputy President Kgalema Motlanthe.

The strategic priorities and interventions of the council will seek to respond to the economic, social and wider human development imperatives of the country. Since the attainment of democracy in South Africa, government has identified the development of adequate human resource capacity to meet the development priorities of the country as a key strategic priority.

As such, the Human Resource Development Council of South Africa becomes a necessary intervention. The council will advise the deputy president on the need for the development and implementation of human resource development policies and strategies in the workplace. It will also encourage business, civil society, government and organised labour to invest in education and training and to take responsibility for human resource development issues within their areas of competency.

According to Deputy President Motlanthe, the council will also identify skills shortages in the country and recommend appropriate solutions to unblock such shortages.

Pillay’s participation in the council will ensure that young people also benefit in the improvement of human resource development in the workplace. He says devising ways of improving education and training while ensuring higher labour productivity in the country will certainly benefit young people.

“By enhancing the skills knowledge and abilities of young people we will certainly be able to ensure their absorption into the labour market and ultimately the ability of all youth to reach their full potential,” he says.

The council will be officially launched on 30 March 2010 in Pretoria.
