National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and XSTRATA agree to end dispute as Department of Mineral Resouces (DMR) facilitates agreement

The Department of Mineral Resources (DMR) announces that the National Union of Mineworkers (NUM) and Xstrata met with Advocate Sandile Nogxina, Special Advisor to Minister Susan Shabangu, at the DMR offices yesterday, 24 October 2011.

“At the meeting I facilitated yesterday (24 October), the affected parties, the NUM and Xstrata, agreed to find a solution to the dispute within seven days,” said Advocate Nogxina.

He added that the parties had committed themselves to explore appropriate means to implement the ESOP scheme which must be in line with existing government policy. This will happen under the continued facilitation of the DMR.

The NUM will today consult its members with regard to the agreement that was reached at the meeting yesterday.

The meeting follows a directive from Minister Shabangu that Advocate Nogxina should serve as facilitator to broker an agreement between the NUM and Xstrata following the strike action by workers.

Minister Susan Shabangu last week intervened after receiving representation from the NUM. Advocate Nogxina has urged both parties to find a speedy resolution in the national interest as the continuation of the strike has a negative effect on South Africa as an investment destination.
