National School of Government invites senior government officials to apply for Executive Education Programme

The National School of Government invites senior government officials to apply for the Executive Education Programme for Senior Government Officials presented by the Institute for Innovation and Public Purpose (IIPP) of the University College London (UCL) in partnership with the National School of Government.

The programme is designed to advance senior public servant’s understanding of their critical role in driving inclusive and sustainable growth, particularly in the wake of the COVID-19 economic meltdown. The programme will impart practical skills and confidence necessary to act as agents of change who possess necessary tools of analysis, decision making and implementation – all critical characteristics of senior and executive managers in a developmental state.

Convened by Professor Mariana Mazzucato, the Professor in the Economics of Innovation and Public Value at the University College London (UCL), the programme brings unique expertise which will challenge participants to critically think about how public value can be re-imagined, practiced and evaluated (post-COVID-19) in the best interest of society.

The National School of Government has partnered with the IIPP to bring to South Africa an institution that is at the forefront of research, thought-leadership and teaching on how to re-imagine the public sector. This furthers the objectives of the Medium Term Strategic Framework which calls for the rebuilding of state capacity with ethical and development-oriented public servants.

The bespoke executive course is designed to run over seven weeks, in a series of intensive, 2-hour synchronous virtual (Zoom) lectures and asynchronous learning sessions. Key themes to be covered and assessed include:

  • Understanding the concepts and practices of an entrepreneurial state and mission-oriented innovation systems thinking,
  • Effectively implementing industrial policy, development financing and inclusiveness; and
  • Managing transformation through creative bureaucracies with dynamic capabilities for digital transformation, policy evaluation, experimentation and learning.

To be eligible to participate in this Executive Education Programme, participants must be in possession of a postgraduate qualification at least at NQF Level 8 (Post-graduate Diploma/Honours/BTech).

Preference will be given, but not limited to:

  • Female executives (from levels of Chief Director or equivalent across all Spheres of Government and Organs of State)
  • Heads of National and Provincial Departments and their deputies,
  • Chief Executive Officers of state owned entities
  • Municipal Managers and those directly reporting to them, and
  • Members of the Executive (across the 3 Spheres) and their Advisors.

An information/orientation workshop that will provide specific information to applicants and prospective participants will take place via Zoom on Friday 11 December 2020.
