Man sentenced to three years for destroying infrastructure

The Morebeng Regional Court last week sentenced Thabo Rolvey Mohale (31) to three years imprisonment following his conviction on the count of contravening Section 3(1) (a) of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act 18 of 2015.

The accused was found by ZZ2 Security Guards while busy destroying Eskom electricity transformer on 19 October 2016 at the ZZ2 farm. The police were called and the arrest followed. He pleaded guilty and was found guilty as charged.

During aggravating, state prosecutor, Moshatane Matome indicated to the court that the people of ZZ2 area were without electricity for some time while busy repairing the damage caused by the accused.

He then relied on the penalty in terms of Section 5 (C) (1) of the Criminal Matters Amendment Act and the court did not deviate from minimum sentence of three years for first offender. Indeed, the court sentenced him to three years imprisonment and in terms of Section 103 of the Firearms Control Act he was declared unfit to possess a firearm.
