National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) welcomes appointment of two Deputy National Directors of Public Prosecutions

The National Prosecuting Authority is proud to announce the appointment of Advocate Nomgcobo Jiba and Advocate Nomvula Mokhatla as Deputy National Directors of Public Prosecutions (DNDPPs). Their appointment is effective from 22 December 2010, and they resumed duty this week.

According to Section 11 of the NPA Act, the appointment of DNDPPs is made by the President, after consultation with the Minister of Justice and Constitutional Development and the National Director of Public Prosecutions. Further the section provides for the appointment of not more than four persons to the positions of DNDPP. Advocates Jiba and Mokhatla join the previous incumbents, Mr Willie Hofmeyr and Dr Silas Ramaite, to make the full complement of Deputy NDPPs.

The appointments are a welcome enhancement to the gender transformation profile of the leadership of the NPA, and we still look forward to the empowerment of more women and other previously disadvantaged groups into leadership positions.

Prior to her appointment, Adv Nomgcobo Jiba was working as Deputy Director of Public Prosecutions at the DPP North Gauteng Division where she continued to display excellent prosecutorial expertise. This was after former Acting NDPP concluded a settlement agreement with her as she had lodged a dispute with the Labour Court against a disciplinary action instituted against her. The parties agreed to maintain confidentiality of the settlement, its contents and the circumstances leading up to the conclusion of that settlement. In light thereof we are not at liberty to discuss same in the media.

Adv Nomvula Mokhatla brings to the organisation a wealth of legal experience, especially in civil litigation, which will be valuable for the NPA’s strategy to balance expertise in both criminal and civil litigation. She is an admitted Advocate of the High Court and had worked with the department of justice as senior state advocate and consultant advocate in legal section.

These are therefore high performing advocates with across the board proficiency within the civil and criminal litigation industry. They are both skilled professionals, who are expected to successfully transform the prosecution with their legal expertise.
