In the last few days members of the National Intervention Unit in Pretoria and in Cape Town have seized a large amount of weapons, ammunition and arrested dangerous criminals.

Pretoria: On Wednesday 1 February 2012 late afternoon members of the National Intervention Unit followed up information from Crime Intelligence of a gang of dangerous criminals roaming the streets of Atteridgeville looking for a business to rob. Police pounced on the four men when they were spotted at a petrol garage in the area. Four handguns were found on the men together with ammunition.

All four men were arrested and appeared in the Atteridgeville Court on Thursday, 2 February 2012 charged for being in possession of unlicensed weapons. The case has been remanded for a later date whilst we investigate the possibility that these suspects might be linked to other armed robberies in Gauteng.

Cape Town: On Monday, 30 January 2012 a complainant who was a firearm collector reported the theft of 10 firearms from his home in Saldanha Bay. Police investigation resulted in the arrest of the complainant’s 28 year old son on 31 January 2012. Further police investigation led police to searching various houses in Vredenburg where we recovered all 10 stolen weapons from the Saldanha case as well as another stolen weapon was recovered.

Seven people were arrested in total six males and one female for being in possession of unlicensed weapons, including the son of the complainant who is also being charged with the break-in and theft of the weapons. All the suspects appeared in the Vredenburg Magistrates Court on Friday 2012-02-03 and the case has been remanded for a later date.

In another incident on Wednesday 1 February 2012, members of the National Intervention unit from Cape Town followed up Crime Intelligence information which resulted in them finding a 22 Trico rifle hidden in bushes near the Heideveld Railway Station, Cape Town. It was established that the rifle had been registered as stolen in Stellenbosch during December 2010.
