The implementation of section 100 (1)(b) of the Constitution in the Eastern Cape's Department of Education is beginning to bear fruit, despite challenges that still stand in the way.
This is according to Ms Wendy Makgate, Chairperson of the Select Committee on Education and Recreation. Ms Makgate received a progress report from the Eastern Cape MEC for Education, Mr Mandla Makupula and departmental head, Mr Modidima Manya. The committee is currently on an oversight visit in the province.
The committee heard that great progress had been made in all six identified priority areas. The priority areas are: management of human resource capacity, implementation of the national school nutrition programme, procurement and delivery of learner teacher support material, provision of learner transport and school infrastructure development programme.
According to Mr Manya, the learner transport system which had collapsed before the intervention was now fully functional and was effectively implemented through a service level agreement signed by the department and the Eastern Cape's Department of Transport.
The committee visited Mzontsundu Secondary School to assess, among other things, learner-teacher support and learner transport. Tomorrow it will visit Walter Sisulu University's Potsdam campus.
