The National Council of Provinces (NCOP) has passed a motion of condolences on the passing away of Honourable Bertha Nonkumbi Gxowa. The motion was adopted by all political parties and provinces yesterday.
Chief Whip of the NCOP, Honourable Nosipho Dorothy Ntwanambi extended her appreciation to “Ma Bertha” for dedicating her life to serving the people of South Africa.
“Ma Bertha played a pivotal role in the fight against apartheid. She was an embodiment of the principles, values and character of the African National Congress (ANC) and the African National Congress Women’s League (ANCWL). Her untimely death has robbed us of a distinguished cadre of the ANC who dedicated her life to changing lives of the people of South Africa” stated Ntwanambi.
“We are even more saddened that Ma Bertha passes away a few days before the launch of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against Women and Children Campaign,” added Ntwanambi.
Mrs Gxowa was one of the organisers of the 1956 women’s march to the Union Building and spoken against the abuse of women and children in our society. She passed away on Friday, 19 November only few days before her 77th birthday.
May her soul rest in peace!
