Name and shame child abusers, protect our children and women

Gauteng government calls for renewed and collective social responsibility to protect vulnerable children and women.

This call, from Gauteng MEC for Community Safety, Ms Nonhlanhla Mazibuko, comes in the wake of media coverage on another rape case of a girl child. Yesterday Sowetan and Daily Sun newspapers featured a story of 11 year old child who was sexually molested at her school in Katlehong, Ekurhuleni.

Calling on communities to renew their collective social responsibility, MEC Mazibuko noted that it is unlikely that a vulnerable child being lured into the criminal’s den may not have been noticed by one or more members of the community. Ms Mazibuko urged communities to act collectively to stop the ongoing monstrous barbarity against women and children.

As part of enhancing safety of learners at school, MEC Mazibuko called on officials in her department to speed-up a name and shame campaign against known and convicted child and women abusers. Properly implemented, this campaign could ensure that institutions of learning maintain a register of convicted child and women abusers.

To lend more concrete and practical support to the essence of the 16 Days of Activism Against Women and Child Abuse, MEC Mazibuko wish to call on the judiciary to send a clear message against those who behave like medieval apes which maliciously raped and killed with insatiable appetite, by meting out lengthy jails terms.
