The motorist arrested for clocking 200km/h on a 120 speeding zone was released on R1000 bail in the Brits Magistrates Court in the North West Province on Tuesday. The case against the 22-year old driver was postponed for trial on the 30 January 2012.
Fardeen Mahomed was allegedly driving a BMW 330i with Gauteng registration plates when he clocked the speed camera that was set up by members of the North West Provincial Road Traffic management Unit on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway near the Bapong Traffic Control Centre at around 16h10pm on New Year’s Day.
Mahomed who is said to be a student at a tertiary institution was driving from Sun City to Laudium with his girl-friend and another couple at the time of the alleged offence.
He was locked up at the Brits Police Station before his court appearance for a bail application on Tuesday.
North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono had in commending the officers who made the arrest urged provincial road traffic management authorities to intensify speed law enforcement as motorists drive home from their holidays as speeding has been the major contributor towards most accidents experienced over the festive season.
