N4 head-on collision claims two lives and injures two seriously in North West

Two male drivers’ died in a head-on collision involving two cars on the N4 Swartruggens- Rustenburg road in the North West province on Tuesday evening.

It is alleged that a 58 year-old male driver of a Kia SUV that was driving from Rustenburg towards Swartruggens lost control of his vehicle due to suspected speeding and collided head on with a Nissan X-trail with three occupants that was driving in the opposite direction. The 52 year-old male driver of the Nissan X-Trail and the driver of the Kia SUV died on impact. The accident occurred about 10 kilometres from Swartruggens at around 18h45.

Both drivers were trapped in their vehicles and the rescue team of paramedics had to use the jaws of life to free them from their wreckages. Two female passengers aged 56 and 47 who were in the Nissan X-Trail were rushed to Netcare Fern Crest Private Hospital with serious injuries.

North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono was shocked and devastated by the report of the accident as the occupants in the Nissan X-Trail were employees from the Human Settlement Branch of her department. The trio were on their way to a Departmental Consultative Committee workshop in Rustenburg.

The names of the drivers who died in the accident are withheld until their next of kin are notified of their untimely deaths. Police are investigating cases of culpable homicide and or reckless driving.

The distraught MEC Mohono wishes to convey her condolences to the families that have lost their loved ones in the accident, colleagues of the late driver within the department and also wish the injured employees a speedy recovery.
