Two people died in a head on collision on the N18 Lichtenburg-Ventersdorp road in
the North West province on Thursday afternoon. It is alleged that the driver of the truck that was travelling from Ventersdorp towards Lichtenburg lost control of his vehicle after it had burst a tyre at around 12:20 pm near Taaiboslaagte Dam.
The truck collided head on with a Nissan 1400 bakkie that was travelling from Coligny towards Bodenstein. The driver of the Nissan bakkie aged 50 and a 14 year old male passenger from the vehicle died on the spot. Another male passenger estimated to be about 14 years was rushed by paramedics to General De La Rey Hospital in Lichtenburg after surviving the accident with serious injuries. The driver of the truck was not injured.
In conveying condolences to the families of road users who died in the accident, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Desbo Mohono urged provincial and local traffic authorities to exercise zero tolerance on worn out tyres. Ninety percent of road accidents experienced in the province since the launch of the Arrive Alive Festive Season Campaign were caused by worn out tyres. MEC Mohono also wished the injured passenger a speedy recovery.
