Music icon, Busi Mhlongo's sad passing after a long battle with cancer

"The passing of Busi Mhlongo is a loss to Arts and Culture family. It is with sadness that we have lost such a talented and world travelled music icon," said the MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation in Gauteng, Ms Nelisiwe Moerane.

Mhlongo, who is joining musicians such as Mama Merriam Makeba, Dolly Rathebe and Kippie Moeketsi, to mention a few, is amongst a long list of South Africans who dared the apartheid Government during the dark days, for us to get the freedom we now enjoy.

Although she will be singing her heart out in heaven; we, the living, will miss her dearly as she was a different breed, she embraced her culture totally. She was always in her Zulu regalia wherever she performed, locally and abroad.

Truly, she was our Zulu and African culture ambassador to the global community.

The world travelled arts and culture stalwart left South Africa in the 1960’s where she spread her wings on the world stage performing and sharing the stage with the likes of the late Dudu Phukwana, legendary Dorothy Masuka, Salif Keita and others.

She gave audiences goose bumps with her electrifying performances every time she went on stage in and outside of South Africa.

"Sis' Busi was a proud South African, who when she returned home in the early 90's continued on her journey of promoting unity, love for self and fellow South Africans and pride. Even the music she produced was about unity, love and patriotism.

"She really loved South Africa as well as the mother continent, 'Africa'. This could be evidenced in the rhythms and the rhymes in her music, full of energy and strength all over her repertoire.

"Most importantly, Sis' Busi treated everyone as family that we will not forget about her. I urge her to continue her love for her people beyond and fly the flag high," said MEC Moerane.
