Municipalities should deal decisively with illegal occupation of low cost housing says MEC Mohono

Municipalities need to take steps to prevent and curb illegal occupation of low cost housing in their areas of jurisdiction and not expect the provincial department to deal with the phenomenon, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono asserted on Tuesday.

In her presentation to permanent delegates to the National Council of Provinces (NCOP) during a session held in Mogwase, MEC Mohono said that the phenomenon is rife in Seraleng and Jouberton Ext 24 in Rustenburg and Matlosana Local Municipalities respectively.

Mohono commended Rustenburg Local Municipality for “taking the bull by its horns” and called upon other municipalities to follow the municipality’s decisive action.

The NCOP delegation and the MEC are,as part of NCOP Provincial Week, scheduled to visit Matlosana Local Municipality on Friday to find out what the municipality is doing to address the issue.

The NCOP Provincial Week is intended to give a platform to members of the NCOP and provincial legislatures to look at Provincial and Municipal Plans and Programmes to encourage citizen involvement and participation in responding to service delivery challenges facing communities.
