The R6,2 million construction of the Mthatha Airport prefabricated temporary terminal building has been completed this week by three local emerging contractors under the guidance of group five.
This building is adjacent to the existing terminal building to allow the airport to continue operating during the construction of the new building, which forms part of the first phase of the Mthatha Airport upgrade project.
The project started in November 2009 through the use of advanced building technology products and included the employment of 15 young labourers from the local community, who were trained on site in plumbing and electricity installation.
This means that very soon services that were rendered inside the terminal building will be made available at the new temporary structure.
Further development phases at the airport will include:
* a new car rental building
* an upgrade to the freight building
* replacement of the balance in the precast concrete security fence
* installation of a new landing system
