Mpumalanga roads claim eleven lives over the weekend

Mpumalanga roads have claimed eleven lives in various accidents since Friday, prompting Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe to plead with drivers to obey traffic rules in order to avoid further accidents. 

Shongwe has also sent condolences to the bereaved families and he has wished those who were injured a speedy recovery. 

At least twenty seven (27) accidents occurred in the province and Ehlanzeni region recorded  thirteen (13) accidents, followed by Gert Sibande and Nkangala regions with five and nine respectively.

Five people were killed in Gert Sibande where an Opel Corsa sedan collided with a stationery truck in the early hours of Sunday morning (24 June 2012), on N17 between Trichardt and Bethal. The driver and passengers in the Opel Corsa sedan died instantly.

In another accident on Verena road (R544) Nkangala, three people died when a sedan collided head-on with a light delivery vehicle on Saturday (23 June 2012) around 19h20. 

The police are investigating culpable homicide, reckless negligent driving in some of the accidents.

The department will soon have a road safety summit to discuss strategies to be implemented to curb the scourge of accidents in the province.
