As part of the province’s zero tolerance to unruly drivers, 92 drivers were arrested for excessive speeding, drunken driving and possession of false documents in Mpumalanga over the Easter weekend.
Operations were staged in different routes of the province throughout the Easter holidays. This year’s focus was on overloaded and unroadworthy vehicles as statistics shown that they were most likely to be involved in accidents.
During the operations, 28 169 vehicles were stopped and 246 were discontinued while 131 were impounded. These vehicles also included trailers which were declared unroadaworthy. 6 224 traffic fines were also issued for various offenses.
The Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison expresses appreciation to its traffic officers and other law enforcement agencies emphasising that such operations should be the order of the day to ensure that the fight against road accidents is won in the province.
The department also thanks responsible motorists who have prioritised road safety and ensured lesser accidents in the province. The department further called for the Department of Justice to ensure that the arrested drivers are harshly sentenced so that whatever offense committed could not be repeated by other drivers.
Road Safety Education remains a priority in the department to assist in reducing road accidents. This year’s accidents statistics for Easter weekend have shown a slight decrease compared to the previous years.
At least 83 accidents have occurred and 24 people died in the entire province this year during the Easter Holidays when last year, 121 accidents have occurred which resulted to the fatalities of 27 people.
