Mpumalanga MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs Simon Skhosana condemns burning of Municipal offices and acts of violence in Ermelo

The MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Mr Simon Skhosana has condemned in the strongest possible terms the burning of municipal offices and acts of violence in Wesselton, Ermelo in Msukaligwa Local Municipality during a protest.

MEC Skhosana would like to advice residents that while government acknowledges residents’ right to protest it is important to ensure that this right is exercised within the ambit of the law. “As government we appeal for calm in the area and call on law enforcement agencies to investigate and arrest as a matter of urgency all those implicated in these criminal actions” said Skhosana.

The department and the provincial government are aware fully aware of the water challenges experienced in the area. We are currently busy with the construction of a temporary 12KM water pipeline that is from Southern Water Scheme to the Northern Water Scheme to address the water supply shortages experienced by residents in Ermelo town, Wesselton, Warbuton and surrounding areas.

To date 9.1km of this pipeline has been constructed and the remaining is expected to be completed by 15 May 2013. The department is closely monitoring this project and we are satisfied with the progress achieved so far. Construction of the permanent pipeline will begin in the middle of this year. In the interim areas affected by water shortages are provided with water through jojo tanks and water tankers.

The department encourage residents to engage in dialogue with the local municipality to voice their challenges. During the fire municipal assets such as furniture and computers were severely damaged, cars were pelted with stones and streets were barricaded with burning tyres by angry protesters.

Preliminary estimates indicate that damages are estimated in the region of R450 000 however the municipality is still quantifying damages to determine the exact costs.
