Mpumalanga MEC for Community Safety, Security and Liaison, Vusi Shongwe applauds security agencies in Mpumalanga for incidence free AFCON games

Without the involvement and cooperation among all members of Justice Crime, Prevention and Security Cluster (JCPS), the Africa Cup of Nations games (Afcon) in Mbombela would not have been successful, this is according to Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe.

Shongwe has praised law enforcement agencies which include the police, South African National Defence Force, members of the Intelligence community and traffic officers for ensuring that there were no incidences for the duration of the games. He said the success that came with hosting of the games displays that the province is ready to host events of any magnitude.

The MEC says the police must also be commended for among others arresting 75 undocumented foreign nationals, the issuing of twenty 20 summonses for violations of various traffic offences. Two suspects were also nabbed for possession of drugs and counterfeit goods. The police also seized two light delivery vehicles and a motor bike which they believed were stolen. Six hundred and fourty seven (647) bottles of liquor were also seized.

“The work of our security agencies during the AFCON Games at Mbombela shows that our province can host high profile events and it also shows that when we work together as members of JCPS Cluster we can achieve a lot,” Shongwe said.

Shongwe also thanked members of the public saying they were good hosts and that has assisted the security agencies to work efficiently. He said the success of such events do not only reflect positively on the work of the law enforcement agencies but will also assist with boosting of tourism and investment prospects for the province.
