The Mpumalanga Department of Education is ready to implement the grade 12 intervention programme intended to enhance learner performance.
The plan focuses on three priority areas:
* Mentoring of principals of underperforming schools
* Direct learner support and
* Resourcing of schools
Mentoring of principals of under-performing schools below 20 percent
This is intended to help principals of underperforming schools manage schools effectively to produce better results in 2010.
Each principal of the 66 schools which performed under 20 percent shall be allocated a mentor.
The mentors will be selected from the senior management team of the department, retired principals, performing principals or professionals. The mentors will provide coaching sessions to principals on a regular basis.
Direct learner support
Direct learner support aims at providing learners with additional quality teaching and learning opportunities to prepare for the 2010 grade 12 examinations.
All schools are encouraged to provide extra tuition to learners during school holidays, weekends and after contact time.
Winter schools
These will run from 21 June to 9 July 2010 in 115 centres. This will be mandatory for all schools which performed below 30 percent in the 2009 grade 12 results.
Only teachers who performed at 70 percent and above in their respective subjects will be considered to teach in the winter school classes.
During the June and July school holidays, from 08h00 to 20h00 on weekdays, The Dial-A-Tutor programme will provide support to learners with their studies.
Learners can dial the toll free number 0800 203 116 to contact selected subject specialists who will be able to give support on the spot.
Provision of tools and resources
This seeks to ensure that schools are given additional resources to enable them to improve their grade 12 results in 2010. It will include the following:
Provision of digital video discs (DVDs) on selected subjects
Excellent electronic media support materials which will guide learners to unpack and learn the subject matter. This can be a useful resource during the extra tuition or exam preparation time arranged for learners.
Providing mobile laboratories
The department will also provide mobile laboratories to schools which do not have this facility so that they can easily conduct practical work in relevant subjects.
