Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison has completed the process of recruiting 110 young people into Road Traffic Law Enforcement (NQF level 4) Learnership Programme in the current financial year.
The process of recruiting the learners was preceded by an advertisement that was placed in the media and it was completed in December last year. Learners will receive training in both Pretoria and Thohoyandou in Gauteng and Limpopo provinces respectively.
Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe visited the learners in both Pretoria and Thohoyandou where he urged them not to misrepresent the province but instead they must follow college rules and focus on their training.
He has also encouraged them to work hard and be determined to succeed so that they could improve their chances of being employed as traffic officers in future.
He said they must remember that the department has a right to withdraw them from the programme if they do not abide by the public service rules and regulations.
“As you will enter into performance agreements with your mentors, you need to abide by the rules regulations and protocol of the college, sign attendance register daily and commit to work all hours agreed to,” the MEC said.
Shongwe said that recruitment of the learners would go a long way towards addressing skills shortage for the department and it will also assist in reducing youth unemployment in the province.
He said that the exercise is also aimed at intensifying law enforcement in order to reduce road accidents that claim many lives in the province. He explained that the programme is part of the efforts by government to improve the learners’ chances of entry into institutions of higher learning. It is expected to assist with bridging the gap between theory and practice.
The enrolled learners are expected to complete the training programme in December 2013 and they would be trained on both theoretical and practical aspects of traffic safety.
