Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe welcomes the sentencing of rhino poaching suspect

The Criminal Justice System must be commended for its contribution to eradication of rhino poaching in this province by bringing to book and successfully convicting a Mozambican citizen, Adriano Lamula for among others attempting to poach rhinos in the Kruger National Park.

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe says that Lamula’s sentencing sends a message that government is committed to combating rhino poaching as it has devastating impact on the rhino species and tourism in this province and the country as a whole.

He also calls for increased cooperation between South Africa, its neighbouring countries as well as European countries where the rhino horns are reportedly having a market in order to curb the scourge of killing rhinos.

“We need to intensify our efforts as members of Justice, Crime and Security (JCPS) departments to ensure that the rhino species do not become extinct as too many rhinos have already been killed in our province and the country as a whole,” the MEC said.

Community members are requested to assist government by coming forward with information that will lead to arrests and successful conviction of rhino poachers.

Lamula was found guilty on three charges that include trespassing in the Kruger National Park, possession of an unlicensed firearm and possession of ammunition. He was sentenced to nine years as he was found guilty on all three charges during at a periodical court sitting in White River recently.

In April 2012, Lamula was caught by Kruger National Park rangers through a tracker by a helicopter and was found in possession of a firearm and police immediately arrested him on the spot.
