Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe praises police for drug bust

Mpumalanga Community Safety, Security and Liaison MEC Vusi Shongwe has praised the police who apprehended drug smugglers recently on the N4 road in two different incidences involving Mozambicans.

On the first incident as reported by South African Police Service, four were arrested allegedly in possession of cocaine worth R85 500 and the other involves a man who was also allegedly found with crystal meth worth at an estimated R12 million.

Shongwe says that such successes should be the order of the day to meet the province’s goals of reducing crime to the lowest percentages. He added that the province should be made a no go area for smugglers and law enforcers must make it difficult for them (smugglers) to use roads to transport drugs and other illegal goods.

“This thing of smuggling must come to an end; we must make it difficult for these people who transport drugs.

I also want to appeal to the police and traffic officers not to turn a blind eye when they suspect any form of criminality. They should act decisively and also arrest those officers who assist crime perpetrators and drug smugglers,” said Shongwe.

He added that the Justice Department should assist by making sure that offenders get sentences which will serve as example to others.

Shongwe further mentioned that the department will continue with its operations even during the festive season and there will be excessive visibility of law enforcers as the period is characterised by a high volume of traffic by people visiting our province.
