The Mpumalanga Executive Council met on 19 May 2010 at the Riverside government complex to look at the state of readiness and all the preparations of the 2010 FIFA World Cup Event to take place in June 2010.The
Executive Council also noted that many roads have been constructed, hospitals have been renovated and the Ehlanzeni district municipality's disaster management centre will be ready during the soccer spectacular.
Premier David Mabuza announced during the State of the Province Address in February this year that Ehlanzeni district municipality's disaster management centre will be used as a provincial disaster management centre during the soccer tournament.
The Executive Council supported the provincial Early Childhood Development (ECD) strategy. The strategy seeks to assist in improving the number of children participating in Early Childhood Development, implement capacity building programmes in ECD centres and improve qualifications among practitioners (teachers).
According to the South African Child's Gauge (2008/09), 74,2 percent of children in Mpumalanga are living in poor households as opposed to the national percentage of 67,7 percent. All the provincial departments are expected to contribute to the implementation of the strategy.
The Executive Council supported the hosting of the Africa Day celebrations on 25 May 2010 in Matsulu, Mbombela local municipality in Ehlanzeni district municipality. This year's theme is called "Promotion of 2010 through cultural diversity". The Africa Day celebrations mark the resilience, triumph, grace, beauty and greatness of the African continent.
The event is also marking the 47th anniversary of the Organisation of African Unity (OAU) and will promote social cohesion, showcase the talents and gifts of the Mpumalanga people through cultural and sporting activities, nation building and cultural diversity.
The Executive Council approved the following appointments:
* Ms AN Majova as General Manager of Programme Management unit in the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport
* Mr NGD Malatjie as General Manager of Roads Infrastructure in the Department of Public Works, Roads and Transport.
