MPs assess impact of cyclone in Kwazulu-Natal

Parliament's Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs will tomorrow 16-17 March visit KwaZulu-Natal to monitor and assess the impact of tropical cyclone Irina, which has wreaked havoc in some parts of this province. In the past week the tropical cyclone destroyed many homes in various municipalities of KwaZulu-Natal.

In line with its oversight responsibility and in accordance with the provisions of the Disaster Management Act 0f 2002, the portfolio committee is duty bound, in the event of disasters, to assess the extent of the damage and to monitor the disaster relief efforts of different spheres of government.

The committee will first meet the provincial government, and thereafter visit the affected communities to establish how efficient government's interventions are.
