Motorist earns a R1 000 fine and a criminal record for overtaking on a barrier line in North West

A thirty-three year old motorist, Sipho Lindelani Buthelezi was fined R1 000 and had a criminal record endorsed against him after he pleaded guilty to reckless driving and for driving a taxi without the required public driving permit in the Swartruggens Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

In welcoming the sentence imposed on Buthelezi, Acting North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety & Liaison, Dr.Magome Masike said that it would serve as a deterrent to other road users to avoid moving violations that cause tragic accidents on public roads.

The fine follows Buthelezi’s arrest for endangering the lives of his passengers and other road users by overtaking on a barrier line on the R509 Magaliesburg-Swartruggens road in the North West province two weeks ago.

Buthelezi who was transporting 12 passengers in a minibus taxi from Johannesburg to Zeerust was pulled over by provincial traffic officers near Skierlek in the Koster district at around 4:30pm after committing the offence.

He was arrested on the spot by a North West Provincial traffic officer after he failed to produce a public driving permit. Passengers who were in his taxi had to be transferred into another taxi.
