A motorist died in a horrific crash involving a truck and car on the N4 Bakwena Platinum Highway outside Rustenburg in the North West province on Friday night.
The accident occurred at around 8:30pm between Kroondal and Marikana Toll Plaza. An Audi A4 that was heading towards Marikana from Rustenburg allegedly hit a carrier truck that was making a u-turn from the side and crashed underneath it.
Rescue teams had to use the jaws of life to free the 36 year old male driver from the wreckage. The man who was alone in the vehicle died on the spot.
The road was partially closed for over three hours and traffic controlled as accident experts and police tried to reconstruct the accident scene to determine the cause of the accident.
Police had to use a helicopter to search for the truck driver who had fled from the scene but he could not be located anywhere near the vicinity of the accident scene.
In conveying condolences to the family of the motorist who died in the accident, North West MEC for Human Settlements, Public Safety and Liaison, Ms Desbo Mohono confirmed that police are investigating a case of culpable homicide, reckless and or negligent driving.
MEC Mohono appeals to motorists to drive with caution, to reverse and or make u-turns only when it is safe to do so.
